8th Annual Electronics Recycling Event

May 25, 2019

The 8th annual electronics recycling event was held in Red Lodge on Saturday, May 25th.  We welcomed back Yellowstone E-Waste Solutions to this year’s event.  They are located in Billings, and they were our recyclers for the first REWIND event in 2012.  To see what is done with the electronics, including re-purposing, visit our recyclers site:

A special thank-you to First Interstate Bank for use of the parking lot.  First Interstate sponsored paper shredding in the back-parking lot; a big hit with local businesses.  The entry and exit, unloading of vehicles, sorting of electronics and parking a large truck are efficiently handled given the great layout of the site.

Red Lodge and Carbon County continues to recycle electronics instead of throwing them away. The 2019 poundage was 11,803 for non-CRT mixed electronics, compared to 12,840 pounds in 2018.  The poundage breakdown:
miscellaneous - 5,147
PC's - 2,278
LCD monitors/TV's - 1,665
printers/copiers - 1,631
A/V equipment - 1,082

This year we were not able to accept CRT TVs or CRT computer monitors.  They are particularly complex to recycling, in part because the glass screens contain lead.  Very few places are equipped to full recycle them, and there are no longer any within feasible shipping distance.  Due to their weight, shipping costs to the few remaining recyclers are prohibitive.  We will be watching this situation to determine whether we may be able to accept them again in the future.  In the meantime, if you can’t wait, we’ve been advised that the Billings landfill will accept them at no charge for Carbon County residents.

Thank-you to all the volunteers including the Red Lodge Lions Club, the Red Lodge High School Green Team, Red Lodge Recycling, and the Carbon County Commission who provided a forklift.  And to the many other non-affiliated individuals.

Pre-event pickup provided around Carbon County remains popular as these materials are collected and stored in the REWIND shed at the Red Lodge Recycling Center and then transported to the annual event.
